East Lyme, CT This week at Carelot Children’s Center our children enjoyed The Butterfly Lady who did an amazing presentation for our Toddler and Preschool Programs. She presented them with real caterpillars and beautiful butterflies she read a story about how butterflies come about and sang some very interesting songs. The children really enjoyed her visiting us and can’t wait to see her again next year. Programs such as this give the children a better understanding of the world around them with hands on experiences. This Friday we invited all our children’s grandfriends to celebrate with us for Grandparents Day. They enjoyed a special treat which included assorted muffins, cinnamon rolls and orange juice. They also did a craft in the classroom with their grandchild. Each child also greeted them with a personalized gift hand made with love by them. Grandparents are an important part of a child's early development. Events such as Grandfriends day supports Carelot Children’s Center belief in the importance of family involvement at school.

July 2008 Carelot Children’s Center of Waterford was recently granted accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This prestigious recognition has been achieved by approximately 7% of early childhood programs nationwide- some 8,212 programs as of August 1, 2002, serving 726,756 children. Carelot is proud to be recognized by NAEYC for our nurturing environment that encourages children to explore, develop and flourish. NAEYC accreditation is a rigorous, voluntary process by which early childhood programs demonstrate that they meet national standards of excellence. Child care centers, preschools, kindergartens, and before and after school programs are eligible to seek NAEYC accreditation. Approximately 15,000 programs are engaged in seeking accreditation. Programs seeking accreditation undergo an intensive self-study, collecting information from parents, teachers, administrators, and classroom observations. They receive an on-site visit, conducted by childhood professionals especially trained by NAEYC, to validate their self-study results. All information is independently reviewed by a team of national experts who grant or defer accreditation. When awarded, accreditation is valid for three years. “The heart of NAEYC accreditation focuses on the child’s experience,” said Larry Bevilacqua, executive director of Carelot Children’s Center and spokesperson for NAEYC. The process carefully considers all aspects of a program including health and safety, staffing, staff qualifications, and physical environment. “The greatest emphasis is on the children’s relationship with the staff and how the program helps each child grow and learn intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally.” According to Bevilacqua, research supports the value of accreditation for children. Children’s language and social skills especially benefit from the better quality found in NAEYC-accredited programs. “These are critical areas for children’s success in school as well as in life,” said Bevilacqua. NAEYC accreditation began in 1985, with the first program accredited in 1986. NAEYC is the nation’s oldest and largest organization of early childhood professionals dedicated to improvement of quality early childhood education. NAEYC established accreditation in response to the growing number of American children spending large amounts of time in group settings away from home, and the uneven-and-often inadequate consumer protection afforded by state licensing of child care facilities. Carelot Children’s Center is located at 203 Boston Post Road, Waterford, CT and serves 52 children ranging in age from 3 months to 8 years. Our educational programs provide a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning. Carelot Children’s Center will now proudly display the NAEYC torch-the sign of NAEYC accreditation. Parents who look for the torch when choosing child care or early education programs for their children will find programs, which have made a commitment to excellence for young children and families. For information about NAEYC or the accreditation process, access NAEYC’s web site at www.naeyc.org/ or contact NAEYC’s Public Affairs Division at 203-232-8777 or 800-424-2460.

Brooklyn There was an explosion in Brooklyn on Wednesday February 27 which no one heard. It was a sensory explosion of gigantic proportions. The children at Carelot Children’s Center were engrossed in sensory activities from there eyes and ears to the tips of their toes. Infants painted with pumpkin filling and stuck their feet in jello, Toddlers made a mural out of shaving cream and food coloring and preschoolers listened to different rhythms and explored goop and water. Sensory Motor activities are a daily ritual at Carelot and an important part of early childhood education. After all, if we are too clean at the end of the day we haven’t had much fun!

The students at Carelot Children’s Center used all five senses this week for their sensory explosion. They experienced pudding, gelatin, frog eggs (tapioca), shaving cream, frozen green beans, and ice. When they were through squishing, splashing and squirting they sat down to a taste testing of pineapples, ugly fruit, mango and kiwi. The preschoolers charted their preferences and it is unanimous that we prefer pineapple above all the rest! Sensory activities are important to the developmental growth of young children. Preschoolers learn through their five senses. The senses of touch, sight, smell, taste, and hearing are how young children explore the world around them. As parents and educators, it is our job to help them explore their senses by providing appropriate activities for sensory play and learning

Our toddlers were immersed in feathery activities from art to sensory to books, songs and finger plays. On Friday January 18 we will have an in house program called Scales, Tales and Feathers. Animals and birds of all kinds will come in for a one of a kind living science treat. Our curriculum philosophy requires that we touch all the senses of the children as we teach them about our weekly themes. We routinely bring in community members and programs to enhance our teachers lesson plans to give the children a different perspective on the theme of the week. While discussing and learning about our themes our little ones are being assessed to help the teacher plan her curriculum to meet the individual needs of the children as they develop and grow.

Students from Carelot Children’s Center Enjoy Story Time -- Killingly, CT – The Pre-K Students from Carelot Children’s Center in Killingly enjoy bi-weekly visits from Killingly Librarian Claudette Stockwell. The children look forward to Ms. Claudette’s visits as she always makes her stories come alive with special props and lots of enthusiasm! Children who are exposed to interactive literacy-rich environments, full of fun opportunities to learn language will develop early literacy skills. Early literacy skills begin to develop in the first 5 years of life. We used to think that children's success at reading depended on getting the "right" first grade teacher. Now we know that a child's likelihood for success in the first grade depends on how much she or he’s learned about reading before entering school. Childrens’ early experiences with books and language lay the foundation for success in learning to read.

Children Getting The True Meaning of Holiday The spirit of the Holiday Season is filling the halls for the staff, families and children at Carelot Children’s Center. To celebrate the true meaning of giving this holiday, Carelot has adopted a family through the local Care and Share Organization. This family will have their gift wishes fulfilled through the staff and families at Carelot and will also be provided their holiday dinner. The “Giving Tree” is set up in the main hallway at the center with tags noting items the adopted family is requesting. “The annual Giving Tree is a perfect opportunity for us to teach our students about others less fortunate” comments Andreanna McKinzie, a teacher at Carelot Children’s Center

Carelot will be accept donations, at each of it’s four early learning centers, during operating hours of 6:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Carelot believes in supporting the communities in which they teach. This program will compliment the two other programs that Carelot Children's Centers sponsors for the holidays where the families within the centers sponsor families in need with in the community and provide Thanksgiving Dinner and Holiday Gifts for those families. The families are identified by either a collaborating organization such as East Lyme’s Care and Share program, The Women’s Center of New London or through identification within the Carelot Family. Programs like these are conducted throughout the year at Carelot and through the Carelot Children's Center PTO to support the curriculum of the centers. Teaching the children to care about the community and to have empathy for others are two of the many objectives of Carelot’s early learning programs and Before and After School Programs.
